Herb Mitchell Cup May 7 – 21, 2024

The Herb Mitchell Cup Ice Hockey Game will be played as a three game series on May 7, 14, and 21, 2024 8:00 PM at the Skating Club of Wilmington. Herb Mitchell was a school teacher at Dickinson High School, and played ice hockey for many years, in addition to being an inspirational coach for the Dickinson High School Ice Hockey team. Herb was also an assistant coach for the University of Delaware Men’s Ice Hockey team before passing away after a fight with cancer on May 4, 1991. Herb was known by his players for his inspirational words of wisdom, positive attitude, and passion for the game of ice hockey. Many will recall that Herb coined the acronym S.H.A.F.T.T., Skate Hard and Fast Together Today. For his many coaching accomplishments, Herb was inducted into the University of Delaware Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

To play in the Herb Mitchell Cup, players may register using the event registration link below.  Once registered, a link to an individual donation page will be emailed to each player. Each player must raise $100 or more to play in the game. Each player will be issued a Team Canada or Team USA jersey. The top two fundraisers, which will be determined as of noon the day of the first game, will be recognized with an award.


100% of the money raised from the event will go towards this years two non profit causes

  • 50 % of money raised will go towards juvenile arthritis research at the Arthritis Foundation
  • 50 % of money raised will go toward improvements to the Skating Club of Wilmington – a non profit 501c

Register to Play

  • Players must be at least thirty years of age.
  • Space is limited to fifteen players and two goaltenders per team.
