The Herb Mitchell Cup Ice Hockey Game will be played on May 23, 2023 at 7:40 PM at the Skating Club of Wilmington. Herb Mitchell was a school teacher at Dickinson High School, and played ice hockey for many years, in addition to being an inspirational coach for the Dickinson High School Ice Hockey team. Herb was also an assistant coach for the University of Delaware Men’s Ice Hockey team before passing away after a fight with cancer on May 4, 1991. Herb was known by his players for his inspirational words of wisdom, positive attitude, and passion for the game of ice hockey. Many will recall that Herb coined the acronym S.H.A.F.T.T., Skate Hard and Fast Together Today. For his many coaching accomplishments, Herb was inducted into the University of Delaware Ice Hockey Hall of Fame
To play in the Herb Mitchell Cup, players may register using the event registration link below. Once registered, a link to an individual donation page will be emailed to each player. Each player must raise $100 or more to play in the game. Money raised from the event will be used to renovate the showers in the men’s locker room at the Skating Club of Wilmington. The Skating Club of Wilmington is a non profit 501c corporation. Players must be at least thirty years of age. Space is limited to fifteen players and two goaltenders per team. The top two fundraisers, which will be determined as of noon the day of the game, will be recognized with an award.
Companies interested in sponsoring the event may contact Richard Roux by email at rich@opennetfoundation.org. 100% of the money raised from the event will go towards upgrading the men’s shower and locker room area.
